FAQ

What to expect when visiting a counsellor

How do we get started?

If you feel that you could benefit from the opportunity to talk in confidence about your current situation, you can call or email me to set up an initial consultation. In this one-off appointment you will be able to explore how counselling could help you before deciding to go further.

How long shall I have sessions for?

Everyone is different. The number of sessions you have will depend on what you bring and what you want from the work we do. Some people who want to deal with a specific issue that is troubling them might stay for up to 8 sessions, others may want to make significant changes in their lives which may take significantly longer. Either way, our work will be a collaborative process so we will review your needs and goals regularly to keep the work on track.

How it works

You will be given the space to talk about whatever feels most important or troubling - this may be the events of the week, a difficult relationship, dreams or troubling thoughts, feelings or behaviours. Listening carefully to what the client says the therapist works to help the client bring their true feelings to the surface, so that they can experience and understand them.

This is a process that can lead to a deeper understanding of yourself, more assured and authentic relationships with others. It is not an instant fix, but it can result in profound change.

What happens in the first session?

There are no expectations, you can be as prepared or unprepared as you like for your first session. You may need to get a lot off your chest and do a lot of talking, or you may have a lot of questions about therapy, or about what is going on in your head and body in relation to your difficulties.

At the end of the session we will discuss how we might work together and consider your hopes and exceptions for our work. Should you decide to continue, we will decide on a regular session time going forward with a review after 6 to 8 sessions.

How long are the sessions? How often do I attend?

All sessions are 50 minutes long. Sessions are weekly and usually at the same time. Sometimes people might choose to come more often if they need more support.
